Weather Tower
In 2010 I worked in collaboration with artist, Doug Hollis on the design proposal for Weather Tower, an 80’ tall structure that visually reveals the presence of the weather patterns along the edge of the Missouri River. This public artwork proposal was a finalist for installation at the Tom Hanafan River’s Edge Park in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
The form of the Weather Tower is a descending spiral from it’s peak, and provides a fluid pathway for collected rain to funnel into collection pools at the base. The skin of the tower is comprised of hundreds of small, perforated aluminum panels, hinged to the main structure. These panels rotate freely as they respond to the wind flow around and through the tower. The panels also reflect the natural light, creating an additional sense of animation. At the core of the tower is a fog generator, with high pressure nozzles creating clouds that rise above the structure and move in response to the circulating air currents.
The images displayed here are a few of the renderings I created for the design proposal.
