SpaceTime
The Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland, California hired me in 2012 to develop a concept design for their 25,000 square foot outdoor space. This project ultimately became known as SpaceTime, a one-of-a-kind outdoor experience that inspires active imaginative play; excitement and interest in space exploration; and the spirit of wonder at discovering worlds unknown.
The process included a series of collaborative events, where select members of the Bay Area’s creative community were invited to participate in charrettes, roundtable discussions, and design exercises. Participants brought valuable perspectives from the fields of landscape design & urban planning, astronomy & space science, ecology, science communication & education, museum exhibit design, interactive design & technology, game design, special effects, immersive theater, sound, and performance.
The ideas generated over the course of several months developed into a cohesive scheme for a rich, sculptural playground involving aspects of science and science fiction. I collaborated with a Pixar story artist to give the design a backstory and a narrative that emerges over time.
With support from the Institute for Museum and Library Service, the concept design phase culminated in an exhibit narrative and spatial design represented in a fundraising booklet. Some of these pages are displayed below.
